GREELEY, Colo. (AP) - A jury is deliberating the case of Florida man charged with raping and killing a 22-year-old woman in Colorado 33 years ago.
Marcello Maldonado Perez was arrested last year on a first-degree murder charge in the 1977 stabbing death of Mary Pierce. His trial began Dec. 6. Pierce was abducted from a convenience store Her body was found two days later in a cornfield. The Greeley Tribune reports that prosecutors say DNA links Perez
to the slaying.
Perez says he and Pierce were both abducted by two men who then forced him at gunpoint to rape Pierce. He says he escaped but didn't tell anyone what happened. He says he didn't know Pierce was killed until his arrest in Port Charlotte, Fla., where he lived at the time.
