John Denver foundation shutting down

ASPEN (AP) - A foundation set up by singer John Denver is shutting down.

The Windstar Land Conservancy is seeking to sell about 950 acres bought by John Denver in the late 1970s and give the money to other foundations that are providing environmental education and helping the homeless. The asking price is $13 million.

Board president Karmen Dopslaff said Monday the money will be given to organizations doing work consistent with the Windstar Foundation's vision and then shut down.

The singer bought the ranch property near Aspen so the Windstar Foundation could create a place in the Rocky Mountains where people could come and reflect on their lives.

In 1997, the singer was killed in the crash of his privately built plane in Monterey Bay, California He was 53.
