A Jefferson County Sheriff's Deputy died in a head-on crash on State Highway 93 north of Golden Sunday, the State Patrol confirmed. The deputy was riding his patrol motorcycle northbound north of West 64th Parkway around 10:00 a.m. when a 2004 Saturn Vue SUV heading southbound crossed the double-yellow line to pass another vehicle, then hit the Harley Davidson head-on. The deputy died on-scene. He was wearing a helmet and protective eyewear. His identity has not yet been released.
The SUV's driver, Kenneth Hosch, 83, from Golden, sustained minor injuries and received treatment at St. Anthony's Hospital in Lakewood. Charges against Hosch are pending. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected in the crash.
Following the State Patrol's announcement of the deputy's death, numerous agencies utilized their Twitter accounts to express their condolences. The Colorado State Patrol's Alamosa office Tweeted, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and colleagues of the JeffCo Sheriffs deputy who was killed earlier today in a crash." Evergreen Fire-Rescue Tweeted, "Our thoughts and hearts are heavy at the loss of an extended member of our family @jeffcosheriffco We stand firmly behind you and the family." Golden Fire-Rescue Tweeted, "Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of a Jefferson County Deputy killed today Ina motor vehicle accident."
