WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Jeff Bzdelik has been announced as the new basketball coach at Wake Forest, ending a weeklong search for a replacement for Dino Gaudio.
Athletic director Ron Wellman said Wednesday that Bzdelik "first and foremost ... understands Wake Forest." The former coach at Air Force and the NBA's Denver Nuggets left Colorado after three seasons, where he was 36-58.
The 57-year-old Bzdelik said current assistants Jeff Battle and Rusty LaRue will remain on his staff. Gaudio was fired because of what Wellman described as a pattern of late-season fades.
Bzdelik was the only known candidate for the job, arrived in Winston-Salem on Monday and spent two days on campus interviewing and touring. He called Wake Forest "my dream job."
BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - Some heavy hitters in hoops have been reaching out to Colorado athletic director Mike Bohn in the wake of Jeff Bzdelik's departure.
Larry Brown has contacted him. So has George Karl. Bohn has even touched base with Nuggets All-Star guard and former Buffaloes standout Chauncey Billups.
They all have their views on the head coaching vacancy following Bzdelik's departure for Wake Forest.
The Buffaloes players are even weighing in on the opening, stumping for associate head coach Steve McClain to be promoted to the position.
Bohn is taking it all under advisement, assembling his search committee to help him make the decision.
