HOUMA, La. -Police in Houma are investigating a deadly dog attack that left a 4-year-old girl dead.
The incident happened about 7 p.m. Tuesday inside the Houma Highland Apartment Complex.
When officers arrived, they learned that a large 2-year-old, 130-pound male pit bull named Niko, had attacked the child inside an apartment and when the mother tried to fight the dog off, the pit bull attacked her.
The mother, 27-year-old Megan Touchet, was able to get away from the pit bull and barricade herself in a bedroom, police said. She was able to hand over her daughter, 4-year-old Mia Derouen, to medical personnel through a window.
The girl received facial and head injuries from the attack and was taken to Terrebonne General Medical Center where she later died.
The pit bull's owner also received moderate injuries and was hospitalized.
Officials said the officers saw the pit bull running loose inside the apartment acting in a "very vicious manner."
In an effort to reduce further injuries, officers had to shoot and kill the dog. In a news conference, police said officers at the scene described the dog that attacked the girl as a "monster."
However, the dog didn't have a history of being aggressive with the family, officials said. There were no signs of abuse or anything related to dog fighting, police said.
Animal control officers removed a 6-month-old female pit bull named Khloe from the residence which didn't receive any injuries as a result of this incident. Khloe, police said, was not aggressive with officers or the family.
