Investigation continues into storage facility fire

The investigation continues into an early morning fire at Peak View Storage.

Around 4:30 a.m. Friday, firefighters with the Cimarron Hills Fire Department were dispatched to the RV and boat storage center near South Powers and Galley Road.

When they arrived, several boats and RV's were on fire. It took crews about 30 minutes to extinguish the flames. A full estimate of the damage has not yet been released.

Resident Mel Hoffman is at a loss for words. His RV and boat are now destroyed.

"It's a little disheartening," he said. "You don't expect something like this to happen in your life."

CHFD says the fire started in one RV and quickly spread from there.

"When you park that many RV's in a lot which you do for storage space, it's real easy for the fire to go from one RV to the next," Love said.

The actual cause of the fire is unknown. Early on in the investigation, fire officials said this could have been a case of arson.

"We did notice a lot of people there when we arrived and that always makes us wonder why they were there at 4 a.m.," Love said.

It's also possible the fire was started accidentally by a homeless person trying to stay warm.

A property manager informed News 5 they've had several encounters with homeless people coming into the lot to sleep.

Hoffman believes a person lighting a fire or candle to stay warm may be to blame. Whatever the cause may be, he is just thankful nobody was injured.

"It's nothing that can't be replaced," he said. "We just have to move on from here."

The storage facility says they do have a company insurance policy and that many of its customers have their own policies.

It will be a lengthy investigation before any money is paid out to victims.

The El Paso County Sheriff's office is currently involved in this case.

New details into this fire are expected to come in next week.
