Investigation continues into Colorado Springs puppy death

Friday morning, the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region notified news outlets of an active investigation into an animal cruelty case.

Around 7:45 a.m., a "witness" reported seeing a 4-month-old Australian cattle dog puppy being thrown out of a moving SUV.

The "witness" identified the vehicle as a dark-colored, small SUV that was seen speeding away near the 500 block of Garden of the Gods Road near the Village Inn Restaurant.

That "witness" took the dog to the HSPPR for treatment. There, animal control staff took a statement from the man.

Veterinary staff in HSPPR's surgery center attempted to manage the puppy's pain and stabalize her. According to a press release, the puppy had blood in her chest and was coughing up blood. Staff performed a chest tap to remove air and blood leaking into her chest cavity and used an oxygen tent to help her breath. After spending several hours trying to save the puppy, she passed away.

Animal control officers went back to the location where the witness reported the incident occurred. After speaking with witnesses and nearby businesses, animal control officers determined the incident reported by the "witness" was inaccurate.

Animal control officers and investigators have since turned their attention to their "witness" who at this time, is only known to be a male subject. That individual is now their prime suspect.

Law enforcement officers were inquiring about surveillance camera video, but it is unknown whether that video has been obtained.

Anyone with information concerning this case is asked to call the HSPPR at 473-1741.

The suspect could face felony charges of animal cruelty. So far, no arrests have been made.
