Increased containment of Eightmile Fire expected Sunday evening

Increased containment of the Eightmile Fire in eastern Fremont County is expected by Sunday evening, despite Red Flag fire conditions, according to incident commander Dan Dallas.  Officially, the fire burning near Phantom Canyon Road between Penrose and Canon City remains 10 percent contained and around 500 acres, but Dallas said at a media briefing Sunday afternoon that firefighters are making good progress on the fire and "much more" containment should be expected by Sunday evening.

230 fire personnel are battling the fire, which was sparked by lightning on June 23.  No structures are immediately threatened, however 16 residences about a mile from the fire in the Red Rocks subdivision remain on pre-evacuation notification status, meaning they should be ready to evacuate at a moment's notice if fire behavior should suddenly change.

The fire is named for nearby Eightmile Creek.
