Residents of neighborhoods near North Cheyenne Canyon have approached the city with growing concerns about illegal activity in the park. They are specific, saying the biggest problems are on the dirt portion of Lower Gold Camp Road.
There is litter left behind after drinking parties, graffiti destroying natural beauty, they hear people firing guns. In the wake of the Waldo Canyon Fire the most concerning thing is evidence of open fires. All of it now has the attention of public safety leaders in the city. "Just based on the fires alone, they're going to increase some police presence in that area," said Emergency Management Preparedness Officer, David Husted. If a wildfire were to start in the canyon it is just a ridge away from neighborhoods.
Another important resource is people using the canyon properly watching for issues. "By all means call the police and let us know," said Husted.
