The handcuffed prisoner who managed to unbuckle his seat belt, open the door of a CSPD car and roll into traffic on I-25 Tuesday afternoon, has died of the injuries he suffered when he was hit by a car.
John Winkler, 20, died Thursday morning, according to Sgt. Steve Noblitt, CSPD spokesman.
Winkler was riding in an unmarked car. Police say it's standard procedure for suspects to ride in the front passenger seat when a car doesn't have a cage in it.
The car was traveling about 60 m.p.h. when Winkler bailed out. After rolling several feet, police say Winkler got up and ran. That's when he was hit by the other car. The woman driving that car was not injured.
Winkler's father John, was arrested in the 6600 block of DelMonico Drive at around 11:30 a.m. Thursday. He had allegedly threatened police because of the incident with his son.
