Hwy 24 reopens in Buena Vista after explosive scare

BUENA VISTA, Colo. - Highway 24 has reopened after the Colorado Springs Bomb Squad, assisting local law enforcement, x-rayed a suspected explosive device and determined that it wasn't a threat, according to the Chaffee County Sheriff's Office.  What appeared to be a mortar round found in the bed of a pickup truck in downtown Buena Vista shut down the area and caused schools to go on "lock out" status. The device, found with a cell phone taped to it and wires "sticking out," is in the bed of a pickup parked between the police station and the library.  A worker at the library discovered it in as she returned to her vehicle.

After the device was found, authorities sent out a "code red" emergency phone notification to numbers in the area.
