The ax has fallen on about 1,000 Space Shuttle workers.
They're the first large group to get pink slips because of the shuttle's pending retirement.
As many as 7,000 others will follow with a ripple effect of up to 23,000 jobs.
The last two shuttle flights are set for November and February, and a third could be added next summer.
A relatively small percentage of workers will be present for that last landing.
The rest will get severance checks.
