Hundreds of babies surrendered under Safe Haven law

A Pueblo baby that was surrendered at a fire station on Christmas Eve, was the 32nd baby given up in Colorado under the Safe Haven law in the past decade. The baby boy is now in custody of Pueblo County social services workers, until a permanent home can be found.
According to the National Safe Haven Alliance about 1,600 to 1,800 newborns have been surrendered nationwide under the law in the past 10 years.
Under Colorado's Safe Haven law a mother can give her infant to a fire fighter, police officer, or hospital worker if the baby is three days old or younger. The law protects the mother from abuse or neglect charges for handing over the baby.
