The U.S. House of Representatives has approved a bill to create a new national cemetery in Southern Colorado.

The bill still has to go before the Senate.

The legislation passed Monday would place a new national veterans cemetery in the Pikes Peak region. Rep. John Salazar of Colorado says that although the region has about 150,000 veterans, the closest national cemeteries are Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver and the Fort Lyon National Cemetery near Las Animas. Both are about 70 miles away.

The bill was sponsored by Salazar, whose district includes Pueblo. Co-sponsors include Reps. Diana DeGette, Doug Lamborn, Betsy Markey, Ed Perlmutter and Jared Polis, all of Colorado.
