St. Mary Corwin Hospital in Pueblo wants people in their neighborhood to lead healthier lives. As part of the Healthy Bessemer initiative, the hospital gave around 70 people free health screenings Saturday morning.

While the sum value of the screenings is estimated at around $1,500, organizer Michele DesLauriers says the hospital wanted to go further. So, they are also providing participants with a free wellness coach to help them reach their goals over the next 5 and a half months.

"We're not just confined to working in the hospital, we want to nurture health in our community," DesLauriers said.

She says whether it's weight loss, smoking cessation or simple healthy living, the coaches are there to provide support. Monica Johnson says she likes the accountability the coaches provide.

"The thing that really appealed to me was the personal coach which is someone who is going to help me stay on track."

The participants will meet again in November to celebrate their progress. DesLauriers says the hospital chose the Bessemer neighborhood because that's where the hospital is located and because the community is celebrating it's 125th anniversary this year. She hopes to expand this program into other Pueblo neighborhoods in the future.
