More than 45 million Americans are driving to Thanksgiving dinner this year, and over 3 million in the Mountain States Region. The AAA Thanksgiving 2011 Travel Forecast shows a four percent increase in the number of cars on the road over last year.

AAA Colorado Communications Director Wavelyn Dreher says the survey measures any trip over 50 miles, meaning a drive from Colorado Springs to Denver would qualify.

Still, traffic is expected to be heavy along I-25 and other major highways Wednesday afternoon and evening. Dreher says drivers should be alert to avoid accidents.

"There are going to be a lot of people on the roads," Dreher said. "Allow extra time both to get to where you're going and getting home on Sunday."

She also recommends leaving early enough on Sunday to not drive exhausted.

The survey also finds that more people are traveling regardless of the economy. Thanksgiving is the first holiday all year in which there has been an increase in travel.
