U.S. Sens. Mark Udall and Michael Bennet say they want a resolution soon on a 2000 federal lawsuit filed by Hispanic farmers and ranchers who allege unfair treatment during the distribution of disaster loans.
The senators' statements Friday came during the week the government began discussions to resolve the case filed by more than 100 ranchers around the country against the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Some of the farmers and ranchers are in southern Colorado.
The ranchers say they were discriminated against when the federal government reviewed and distributed disaster loans from 1981 to 2000. Udall says the farmers and ranchers deserve the right to rebuild their lives and their businesses. Bennet says justice is "long overdue."
