High surf hits California, Hawaii shores

Forecasters say hazardous surf will roll ashore along parts of the California coast and Hawaii's north and west shores.

The National Weather Service says big surf will be produced on west-facing California beaches with a dramatic rise late Tuesday and that some beaches on the central coast could see sets up to 25 feet. Forecasters say coastal flooding in low-lying areas and significant erosion are possible Wednesday and Thursday when the surf occurs during severe high tides.

The service also has issued a high surf warning for Hawaii as waves up to 25 feet pummel those shores. The giant surf brought out big-wave riders Monday, with some taking on 50-foot waves on the outer reefs. Oahu lifeguards issued 1,700 warnings, assisted 40 people and rescued 14 others Monday.
