High fire danger and severe storms

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for the Sangre De Cristo and Wet Mountains and the San Luis Valley today from 11am until 8pm. Weather conditions today in these parts of Southern Colorado favor extreme fire behavior. Expect it to be a dry and breezy out with wind gusts up to 40 mph at times out of the southwest.

It'll be breezy at times around the Pikes Peak region today as well with the rest of Southern Colorado experiencing less wind. Winds will be generally out of the southeast which will help usher in more moisture. The added moisture plus afternoon instability may produce a few strong to severe thunderstorms this afternoon and evening out over the Southeastern Plains where a slight risk for severe weather is possible. Large hail and damaging wind will be the main threats. Highs will be in the 80s/90s today with mostly to partly sunny skies along the Front Range.

The extreme heat and a gusty wind returns Monday though light winds are expected for the middle of the week. Isolated showers and storms are possible later in the week for the mountains and Front Range.
