Democratic gubernatorial candidate John Hickenlooper has come out against plans by the Army to expand training in Pinon Canyon.

Hickenlooper made the comments Sunday evening during a campaign stop in Hoehne in southeastern Colorado.

The Denver mayor told property owners he is pro-military, but he opposes the expansion because it would hurt farmers and ranchers.

Republican opponent Scott McInnis favors expansion and his primary opponent, Dan Maes, says he would like those who want to sell their land be allowed to do so.

The Army says it needs more room to accommodate new weapons, new tactics and additional soldiers.Pinson Canyon is used extensively by Fort Carson soldiers.

Many ranchers near Pinon Canyon oppose the move, warning it could permanently damage range land.
