Heavy smoke is pouring over the mountains southwest of Pueblo. According to the Pueblo Sheriff's Office it is coming from the Medano fire at the Sand Dunes.

The smoke is obscuring the view of Greenhorn Peak from Pueblo and residents of Rye say visibility is down to a quarter of a mile.

The Medano Fire was reported at 600 acres in size Thursday morning. The Sand Dunes National Park is still open to visitors with the exception of the trail that leads over Medano Pass. The fire is on the north side of the park.

Pueblo County Emergency Officials are requesting that reports of fire in the areas of Colorado City and Rye be limited to reports of visible flames only. Sheriff Kirk Taylor appreciates the vigilance of the citizens but worries excessive calling to the 911 center could delay a response to an actual emergency.

This is also a reminder that a Red Flag Warning remains in effect in Pueblo until 9 p.m.
