Heart group organizes blood drive blitz

As we get closer to Valentine's Day a local group is hoping you'll give a gift from the heart this year by donating blood. The Mended Little Hearts of Colorado Springs is organizing a series of blood drives this week with some help from the Penrose-Saint Francis Blood Vessel, a mobile blood donation vehicle.

Mended Little Hearts is a support group for parents and relatives of children with congenital heart defects. Spokesperson Mary Berry explains that heart patients tend to use most of the blood that is donated and these drives are their way of giving back.

"What Mended Little Hearts likes to do is raise awareness, we like to support our families," Berry said. "We like to raise money for research and support our families, but we also want to be the organization that gives back to our community."

The group was at Colorado Springs Dodge on Wednesday and will be set up again Thursday morning at 9:00 at Remington College, 6050 Erin Park Dr. Suite 250.

The two other blood drives are scheduled for Friday from 2:00 - 6:00 p.m. at the Walmart at 1575 Space Center Drive and Tuesday from 11:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at Jackson Elementary School at 4340 Edwinstowe Avenue.
