Getting together with friends to watch the Broncos game doesn't have to be an excuse for eating an unhealthy diet. Dietician Martha Rosenau of Peak Nutrition says the best way to prevent adding inches to your waistline is to keep portion sizes in check.
For example, the soft drink companies are now selling drinks in mini-can sizes, making it easier to keep our calorie consumption lower.
"These great new mini cans now make it all so easy," Rosenau said.
In place of queso or guacamole, she suggests serving a spicy black bean hummus with either chips or fresh cut veggies.
"I encourage LARGE platters of cut veggies, and smaller bowls of chips and pretzels," Martha said. "If you are going to have chips and pretzels, choose baked chips over the regular chips, it brings those fat grams down."
Speaking of fat grams, Martha says to ditch the brats in favor of a veggie burger.
"Brats come in at a whopping 27 grams per link, of fat," she said. "Veggie burgers taste great and they're 1/3 the calories of a brat."
Here is Martha's recipe for Spicy Black Bean Hummus:
1 garlic clove, peeled
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1 tablespoon tahini (roasted sesame seed paste)
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 (15-ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 small jalapeño pepper, chopped (about 2 tablespoons) Dash of crushed red pepper
2 teaspoons extra-virgin olive oil
Dash of ground red pepper
1 (6-ounce) bag pita chips (such as Stacy's Simply Naked)
Place garlic in a food processor; process until finely chopped. Add lemon juice, tahini, cumin, salt, black beans, jalapeño pepper, and crushed red pepper; process until smooth. Spoon bean mixture into a medium bowl, and drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil. Sprinkle with ground red pepper. Serve with pita chips.
