Head of Cesar Chavez School Network resigns

The head of the boards that govern the Cesar Chavez Network of schools resigned Thursday afternoon.

Dennis Fuerstein has been the head of the board for the last eight years.  He resigned at a news conference, saying there has been so much controvery, it was necessary for him to step down.  He still plans to volunteer for the schools, Cesar Chavez Academy and Delores Huerta Preparatory High.  He says he has had recent meetings with multiple foundations that are interested in contributing to the schools.

The two schools have a total of more than 1,500 students.  They have been plagued with financial problems and only months ago fired the founder, Dr. Lawrence Hernandez.  A total of 29 full and part time employees have lost their jobs in the last few months as the board was forced to cut budgets. The schools still face a budget shortfall of $475,000.

Fuerstein's resignation is effective on February 12.  He will be replaced by Donielle Gonzales.
