Hazmat situation closes roads & keeps neighbors cautious

A hazmat situation on the southeast side of Colorado Springs leaves roads closed and a community cautious on sunday.

Neighbors called 9-1-1 Sunday morning, with reports of fumes and a chemical smell at the Aspen Townhomes on East Pikes Peak Avenue and Byron Drive.

A hazmat crew, along with Colorado Springs police and fire departments, responded to the complex where they began an investigation into an illegal drug lab.
The C.S.F.D Batallion Chief on scene said after crews went in there was no evidence of any lab, but had to check nearby homes and neighbors to make sure no one was suffering from chemical inhalation. No one was found ill, but traffic was blocked for several hours, as crews cleared the investigation and found the area safe.
