Hazmat scare at Colorado Springs apartment cleared

The Colorado Springs Fire Department spent hours today investigating a possible hazmat situation at the Palo Verde Apartments on North Murray Blvd.

The call originally came in as a structure fire at about 3:30 this afternoon, but when firefighters went to investigate, instead of a fire, they found an apartment containing suspicious chemicals. A hazmat team and investigators came out to inspect the vacant apartment, and after taking samples of the fluids inside, determined that there was no danger.

"We've just found household chemicals, nothing else other than that," said Lt. Stacy Billapondo, of Colorado Springs Fire Department. "We don't suspect anything other than maybe possibly some curiosity that led to a small little fire that extinguished itself."

Twelve families were removed from the building during the investigation, but were allowed back into their homes shortly after 7 p.m.
