Hazards from beetle-killed trees close Colorado campground

A campground northwest of Fort Collins is the first of the season to be shut because of hazards from beetle-killed trees, and more closures are expected to follow.
The Dowdy Lake campground near Red Feather Lakes was closed last week. Campgrounds have been closed because of dead trees toppling over and to give U.S. Forest Service employees a chance to remove the trees. This summer's campground closures are expected to exceed last year's total of 32.
Some were closed for two weeks and others for the entire summer. The Forest Service has received $30 million to deal with the aftermath of the bark-beetle epidemic that has killed about 3.6 million pine trees in the state and southern Wyoming.
