Residential energy use occurs in various sources of the home. Refrigeration, appliances, water heaters and lights all use energy as does space conditioning (heating and cooling). If you are interested in understanding or reducing your energy consumption, you may want to complete a free home energy audit.
The Energy Depot audit tool allows you to input information about your home and appliances and evaluate what measures you can take to make your home more energy efficient. A willingness to make these changes and/or improvements to your home may save you a significant amount of money over time. The audit takes about 15-20 minutes to complete.
The cost to space condition (heat/cool) a home is influenced by five factors including:
the thermostat setting,
the temperature outside,
the quality of the insulation and air tightness of the home,
the efficiency of the heating/cooling system, and
the cost of the energy used by the heating/cooling system.
You have control over all of these factors except one, the temperature outside. The other four items can be changed to some degree by you, the homeowner. Your personalized energy audit will help you evaluate these four factors.
Before starting a home efficiency project, it's best to know where to begin. We offer this free program to help identify trouble spots in your home and improve its energy efficiency.
