At least 300 people gathered Tuesday night on the Harrison High School campus to remember Victorino DeJesus Martinez and Juan Neri Segura. The two drowned in Prospect Lake in Colorado Springs Monday afternoon.
Victorino was remembered as a great soccer captain.
"He had motivation," remembers fellow teammate and friend Ulises Meca. "He always inspired the new guys. He yelled at us a lot, but his words weren't to yell at us, but to motivate us, make us better and correct us on the field."
"I'm going to miss them," says classmate Edwardo Montana.
Fellow students say Juan was always close to Victorino's side for friendship and support.
Principal Cheri Martinez told the crowd these two young men spoke very little English when they came to the school a few years ago. This year, Martinez says, they were set to graduate and were proud of that fact. She went on to tell students to remember to value their education and their lives.
They were both 18 years old.
A memorial service is set for Thursday from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Colorado Springs.
