Recent weeks have been a torment for hundreds of Haitian college students in the United States. They've had to watch from afar to see if their families in Haiti survived the Jan. 12 earthquake - and how their relatives are struggling with the aftermath.
About 850 Haitians study as international students at American colleges and universities, according to the Institute of International Education. Some have thought about leaving school to join their families in Haiti but the harsh reality of conditions on the ground has made that unrealistic for many.
Some have heard from their families that they should stay where it's safe and where they can do the one thing that could make a difference in the future - get their education.
