A Colorado gun lobby is threatening legal action against the Colorado State University System for its proposal to ban weapons from its Fort Collins and Pueblo campuses.

The Rocky Mountain Gun Owners group says university officials have not shown that banning guns on campuses would improve public safety and that Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden is joining them in opposing the proposal.

CSU System officials will consider the prepossessed ban next month. It would allow exemptions for educational purposes and to people who face a serious threat, if they have a concealed-carry permit.

Almost all campuses nationwide, including the University of Colorado, already ban concealed weapons. CSU is accepting public suggestions on the proposal until January 29.
