The Colorado Springs Sky Sox fell to the Fresno Grizzlies 4-3 Wednesday afternoon at Security Service Field.
Runs were at a premium all afternoon long as the Grizzlies tallied single runs in the second, fourth, fifth and ninth innings. Brad Eldred doubled home the run in the second to make it 1-0. In the fourth, a well executed double steal allowed Edgar Gonzalez to score on a steal of home for a 2-0 advantage. Conor Gillaspie brought in the Grizzlies third run with an RBI double in the fifth inning.
The Sox battle back to get within one run at 3-2 on an Eric Young Jr. sacrifice fly and a Charlie Blackmon RBI single in the seventh.
Gonzalez provided the Grizzlies with some crucial insurance in the ninth with a solo shot off of reliever Jim Miller to make it 4-2.
The Sox would tack on another run in the ninth on a Chris Nelson RBI single, but Mike Jacobs struck out with the tying run on first to end the game.
Sox starter Alan Johnson (1-1, 1.62) took the loss in a solid outing, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits over six innings while striking out five and walking two.
Shane Loux (2-3, 2.89) picked up the win for Fresno with six shutout innings while allowing only five hits. Marc Kroon pitched the ninth for his sixth save of the season.
The top three hitters in the Sox order, Young Jr., Blackmon and Nelson, each finished with two hits and an RBI apiece.
With the loss, the Sox fall to 12-15 on the season while Fresno improves to 14-13 with the win.
The Sox will attempt to salvage a series split Thursday as they take on the Grizzlies in the final game of their four-game series. Greg Reynolds (2-0, 4.24) takes the hill for the Sox against lefty Matt Yourkin (2-2, 5.81). First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
