Grandmother wrongfully jailed for five days

A Colorado Springs grandmother of nine was wrongfully arrested on Jan. 3 and spent five days wearing orange in the El Paso County jail.

Katie Wilson had already resolved her case for a misdemeanor in 1982. The alleged probation violation was in 1980. Three decades later, the Orange County Sheriff's Office in Florida issued a warrant for her arrest by mistake.

"I was terrified," Wilson said in an interview Tuesday morning at her home in Briargate.

"I didn't know who to talk to. I didn't know who not to talk to. I was afraid that something was going to happen to me. I had seen and heard all the horrible things."

Her husband, Jim, worked frantically and tirelessly to get her out of jail. A Colorado judge released Wilson on her own recognizance, but even after the Wilsons and their attorney Dan Kay presented proof, the Orange County Sheriff's Office refused to acknowledge their mistake.

"It's just a lack or caring about what they're doing and people's basic rights," Kay said.

While Katie Wilson doesn't plan to sue the state of Florida for millions of dollars, she does want an explanation and her attorney's fees paid for.
