Police officers in Grand Junction say they nearly lost K-9 "Oldo" when a suspect tried to drown him.

Thursday night the dog sniffed out an alleged burglar who ran from a shed. When the suspect refused to comply to officers commands, they loosed Oldo. The dog latched onto the suspect, later identified as Richard Stieb, 38.

They tumbled into a canal and officers said Stieb then held the dog's head underwater for about a minute.

They jumped in, freeing the dog and cuffing Stieb.

Oldo was unconscious for several minutes, but revived. He had some bruising on his face and water in his lungs. Water and even a few small rocks in his stomach.

Stieb faces multiple charges, including cruelty to animals.
