Gov. Bill Ritter's deputy chief of staff has withdrawn from consideration to be the next U.S. attorney in Colorado amid questions raised during Ritter's gubernatorial campaign.

Stephanie Villafuerte said Monday that a "needless and extraneous political fight" has overshadowed an independent assessment of her qualifications.

During Ritter's 2006 campaign, the Denver district attorney's office accessed a restricted law-enforcement database to check on an illegal immigrant mentioned in an ad against Ritter, than a Denver prosecutor. Villafuerte has denied asking the DA's office to access it.

Information in the ad came from former Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Cory Voorhis, who lost his job after accessing the database.
