ASHEBORO, N.C. (AP) - A 12-year-old gorilla at the North Carolina Zoo is a new mother.
The state-owned zoo near Asheboro says the male baby born Saturday is healthy, strong and active. Its mother is named Jamani and came to North Carolina from the San Diego Zoo in January 2010.
It's just the second such birth in the zoo's history. Its first baby gorilla, Kwanza, was born in March 1989 and transferred to Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo nine years later.
Another female gorilla is also pregnant. Sixteen-year-old Olympia is expected to give birth in November.
Zoo officials say there have been just four births out of eight pregnancies recorded during 2011 and 2012 at the 52 zoos accredited by the U.S-based Association of Zoos & Aquariums.
