With prayers, music and pomp, Germany is marking the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Thousands are expected to gather tonight in front of the Brandenburg Gate, the symbol of Germany's division and then of its reunification. Music and fireworks will hark back to the night of Nov. 9, 1989, when people danced atop the Berlin Wall. East Germans flooded west that night, setting in motion events that soon led to Germany's reunification.
Chancellor Angela Merkel has begun the day with Germany's President Horst Koehler and other leaders at a prayer service at a former East Berlin church that was a rallying point for opposition activists. Merkel grew up in the communist east and remembers how "speechless and happy" East Germans were that night.
Music will be played from Bon Jovi and Beethoven. Memorials are also planned to the 136 people killed trying to cross the border. Candles will be lit and 1,000 towering foam dominoes placed along the wall's route will be tipped over.
