Former Air Force Academy Superintendent and retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Albert P. Clark Jr. is being buried at the academy cemetery.

Clark's funeral was being held Wednesday at the academy's Cadet Chapel, followed by a graveside service.

Clark died in Colorado Springs March 8 at age 96.

Clark spent 33 months as a prisoner of war during World War II after being shot down over France. His efforts in helping 76 POWs escape from Stalag Luft III in 1944 inspired the movie "The Great Escape."

He was superintendent of the Air Force Academy from Aug. 1, 1970, to July 31, 1974.
