A 1999 Florence High School graduate is on a mission to raise $5,000 in honor of a classmate who recently died from Cystic Fibrosis. Brandon Hughes, 29, says he's almost halfway there.

Candi Holzer passed away July 28 after a lifelong battle with Cystic Fibrosis, a genetic disease in which a sufferer's lungs and digestive system clog with mucus, making it very difficult to breathe.

Hughes is participating in the Cycle for Life bicycle ride in Longmont on September 11 and is riding in Candi's honor. As of Friday, he had raised $2,040 toward his $5,000 goal. "Every penny counts," Hughes says. "The Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is an awesome charity because they use 90 cents of every dollar donated for Cystic Fibrosis research."

The Cycle for Life consists of three routes: a 25-mile route, a 45-mile route, and a 65-mile route. Hughes will participate in the 45-mile route. CLICK HERE to donate.
