A Fort Carson soldier serving in Kunar province, Afghanistan, was killed in action.

Sgt. Kenneth R. Nichols Jr., 28, of Chrisman, Ill., died Tuesday of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked with rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire. Reports in his home town say the father of four was promoted to Sergeant just hours before the ambush.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.
