COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Military officials are weighing whether there's enough evidence to try a 20-year-old Fort Carson soldier on the charge of premeditated murder in the death of an Afghan prisoner.

The Army is expected to continue a hearing Tuesday to decide if Pfc. David Lawrence should stand trial.

The Gazette in Colorado Springs reports that the soldier's attorney, James Culp, said during the hearing Monday that his client is taking medication for schizophrenia and isn't mentally fit to stand trial.

But prosecutors claim that he was calculated when he's accused of firing a single shot into the head of a prisoner north of Khandahar.

The Indiana native was serving in Afghanistan with the 1st Brigade Combat Team of the 4th Infantry Division.
