Fremont County voters say no to sales tax increase

One of the major issues in Fremont County was Question 1A.  It was asking for a half-cent sales tax increase to go to public safety. Voters turned down the measure by 356 votes: 5,884 "no" votes to 5,528 "yes" votes.

Fremont County Sheriff Jim Beicker says his department has already scaled back services and cut staff members.  He worries about increased response times.

"It frustrates me because we want to do a good job and provide the service our citizens deserve, but you know, it gets tougher," says Beicker.

Fremont County Clerk & Recorder Norma Hatfield says the mail-in ballots came in at a steady pace all day Tuesday.

In the end, 11,480 ballots were dropped off at the election office.  More than 24,000 ballots were mailed to voters, and 2,000 of those were returned as undeliverable.
