Fountain handgun thief identified

Fountain Police say they have identified a teenager who they say broke into a car and stole a gun in the Fountain Walmart parking lot.

Officers released the picture of the suspect this morning.

It was taken yesterday with Walmart surveillance cameras.

Police say though he has been identified, they won't release his name because his under the age of 18.

The victim thought he was doing the right thing... by leaving his gun in the car.

"Because we're an open carry state, he took the gun with him but decided to leave it in the car when he went inside of Walmart. When he came out, he realized that the gun was gone and that somebody had gotten into his car," Greg Perry, a Fountain Police Officer said.

Still shaken up to talk on camera, the victim told us what happened over the phone.

"I went into the store with my kids to do a little food shopping with my family, came out and my car was open, glove box was open, console was open, the holster was on the floor and the gun wasn't there," the victim said.

Surveillance video shows this man walking around the parking lot and breaking into the victim's locked car.

Police say he then went inside the Fountain Walmart to grab his friend and left.

The once legal weapon... now in the wrong hands.

"I'm very concerned because the guy now goes from breaking into cars to having a pistol in his hands to rob anybody he wants to rob. So now it's a different ballgame for him," the victim said.

Even though the gun was hidden, tucked under the driver's seat, the suspect still found it.

"It's a 9mm pistol with 17 bullets in it," he said.

Police say with any weapon... it's important to keep them locked up.

"If you're going to carry a gun around with you and you don't want to take it in the building, it needs to be locked up in the trunk or locked in something secure that can't be removed," Perry said.

There's no law that says you can't leave guns in your car. But police say... it's not a good idea.

"If you're going to take your gun with you to go shopping and that's all you're going to do, just leave it at home," he said.
