Fort Collins is cracking down on bicyclists who ignore traffic laws.

The college town has approved a $35 fine for cyclists who run red lights, ride on the wrong side of the road or otherwise break traffic laws.

The policy comes amid driver complaints that too many bicyclists disregard the rules of the road. Bicyclists will be charged only for tickets that would be considered a 1-point or more moving violation if they had been issued to a motorist.

The bicycle traffic policy takes effect next week. City officials predict they'll collect about $7,000 a year in fines.
