Fort Carson soldier to receive Silver Star

Fort Carson, CO - A Fort Carson Soldier will receive the Silver Star Medal, for saving the lives of 24 others in combat.

Maj. Gen. Paul LaCamera will present Sgt. Andrew Mahoney with the Silver Star for his actions while serving as a member of the brigade commander's personal security detail, while part of 4th IBCT, 4th Inf. Div., during combat operations in Asadabad, Afghanistan, on Aug. 8, 2012. Mahoney placed his life at risk by intercepting a suicide bomber who was moving toward his patrol.

This was the same incident that claimed the lives of Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin J. Griffin and Maj. Thomas E. Kennedy, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, and Maj. Walter D. Gray, 13th Air Support Operations Squadron.

The Silver Star is the third-highest military combat decoration, awarded to a member of the United States Armed Forces for gallantry in action while engaged in action against an enemy of the United States.
