Fort Carson soldier killed loved his family and military service

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Funeral arrangements are pending for an Oklahoma soldier who died in Afghanistan.

Department of Defense officials say Sgt. Allen R. McKenna Jr. of Noble died Tuesday in Kandahar province, but how he died wasn't specified. The 28-year-old was assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, part of the 4th Infantry Division out of Fort Carson, Colo.

McKenna's mother, Connie Mitchell of Norman, says her son loved the outdoors, his family and military life.

She told The Oklahoman that McKenna was very adventurous as a child, and would cook anything he caught while out on fishing and hunting trips. She says the military was a natural choice for him.

Mitchell says McKenna was able to come home in December when his wife, Lindsey, gave birth to their youngest child, Waylon.
