Colorado's Fort Carson will play a role in President Obama's plans to send 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan.

About 4,500 Fort Carson soldiers are expected to head to Afghanistan next year, joining 4,400 from the post who are already serving there. There are also several thousand soldiers now training to deploy to Iraq and they could also be redirected if defense officials order a shift.

Fort Carson soldiers have been fighting in Afghanistan's highlands and 17 were killed there in October, the post's deadliest month since Vietnam.
