A Fort Carson medic will receive a valor medal for treating injured soldiers and firing at the enemy even though she was wounded herself in a 2009 battle in Afghanistan.

Cpl. Helen Ruhl of the 4th Infantry Division will receive the Bronze Star with Valor Device on Wednesday.

Ruhl was medically evacuated to the U.S. after the Sept. 24 battle in eastern Afghanistan. She spent several months recovering at Brooke Army Medical Hospital at Fort Sam Houston, Texas.

Brig. Gen. James Pasquarette, the 4th Infantry Division's deputy commanding general for support, will present the medal.
