Fort Carson gets new top commander

Fort Carson is getting a new top commander as Maj. Gen. David Perkins formally says goodbye and takes a new assignment at Fort Leavenworth, Kan.

Maj. Gen. Joseph Anderson will succeed Perkins in a ceremony today at the Mountain Post.

Like Perkins, Anderson will command the 4th Infantry Division.

Perkins and his 4th Infantry Division headquarters staff spent most of the past 12 months in Iraq, overseeing U.S. forces in the northern part of that country.

Perkins has been nominated for promotion to lieutenant general. His new job will be commander of the Combined Arms Center, overseeing schools and training centers including air defense, armor, aviation, infantry and intelligence.
