Josh McDaniels and Matt Cassel are trying hard this week not to think about what might have been.
When the New England Patriots dangled Cassel in trade talks last winter, they first called the quarterback's former tutor, McDaniels, who had just left the organization to coach the Broncos. The Patriots sent Cassel to Kansas City instead, but the seeds of discontent in Denver were planted once Pro Bowl passer Jay Cutler learned of the trade talks and demanded a ticket out of town.
Now, the Broncos have Kyle Orton under center and are 7-4 heading into their game Sunday at Kansas City. The Chiefs are 3-8 under Cassel.
